Once the trailer was loaded; I do have tracks on my skid steer. I put the winch back on the forks and then backed up to the trailer with the skid steer and hauled them to the road. That certainly does not mean that a skid steer has no value. My skid steer works wonders with a bucket or grapples. A few years ago I worked with a crew that had a winch mounted on the front instead of a bucket. It did not take long to change the winch into grapples which is a good thing. With the winch the thing was down right dangerous. You guys are overlooking a couple of things. There is a massive worm gear reduction box between the hydraulic motor and the winch drum. The gear ratio is probably at least 60:1 maybe more. Pulling hard enough on the cable to spool out is just about impossible. Therefore no need for clutches and brakes and fancy hydraulic controls. With a tractor pto unit, I'd have to skid them to a clearing with each hitch so I could pick them up with a skid steer, my thinking a pto unit would be a major time killer and there would no simple way to winch the material sideways to the trails while still attached to the cable due to the trails not wide enough to turn the tractor sideways.

Im looking at putting a winch on my skidsteer for smaller clearing and logging jobs where i cant bring in a skidder. Its a 743 bobcat. Was wondering what size to get. Ineed to pull good sized logs. Then you would have to skid backwards. Not having the root grapple in front sort of negates much of the handy part of the skid steer in the woods. Working a winch by yourself means that you are on and off the machine every few minutes. The cost of the SS hydraulic winches was considerably higher than the 3pt mechanicals. A new Holland LS 180 that had a set of Goring tracks I had welded rebar on the cleats so it would give me good traction. I built and still have a 20 ton hydraulic winch that runs off of the skid steer. It is mounted on with its own arch and can carry up to 300 ft of cable.
I need a winch. I want it to be portable. I want a hydraulic winch so I can hook it to my skid steer hydraulics. I figure I would just strap the winch to tree and hook to whatever I want to pull. I can put the skid steer next to it and use the power. Here is the problem. I .
