We are looking at adding a skid steer to load 5.5x4 round bales. I typically load two high on a 24' gooseneck trailer. We are getting ready to build a hay barn that will allow me to stack 3 high in the barn.
I handled many 4x5 silage bales on hard surfaces with skidsteer. Loader tractor did the field pick up and hauling, skid steer in yard loading wrapper. Lift height is an issue if you want more than one high on a deck. Skidsteer is light in . I can move round bales around very quickly with a NH LX665. I could unload two 5x4 bales at a time if I lowered them closer to the ground, and was on level ground. They don't get around that well in the mud without tracks. Should be able to get into a used LX665 or LS170 for around 10K with a heater and cab kit. Does anyone know what skid steer would be best use for moving and lifting round hay bales? And brand names would be good to know. We have cattle and use round hay bale feeders during winter time for them to eat.
If you want to carry and set 2 bales at a time, get 4 long spikes across the front, evenly spaced. That way if you move one bale, you can grab it with the center 2 spikes. If you have slow hydraulics now you will definitely need to go to the PTO pump and stand-alone hydraulic system for the loader. However, I rarely use a tractor to handle hay, almost all our hay handling is done with skidloaders, either 1845C Cases, or 259 B3 Cats. That tractors do fine with the hay, I just prefer the speed and hydro-static controls of the skid loaders. 3 of the tractors do have front end loaders with hay spears, and the one 4wd 7610 gets some feeding .
